You’ve Been Unframed!
Apart from the frameless notice boards being discussed here, there is a huge choice of frames for notice boards, including a wide range of colours and finishes. But sometimes choosing a frameless version can alter how something as basic as a simple notice board can fit into it’s surroundings. The type of edge can convey a subtle message too. For example a wood frame often suggests a traditional, trustworthy and quality message. Additionally it often makes a better choice for a home office, as it blends into the surrounds more subtlety. A standard silver anodised aluminum frame however might be considered more industrial in nature, more functional & robust. That being said, there have been a number of developments in the overall design appearance of some aluminium frames. Resulting in designer versions, which extend the industrial message into a more upmarket executive area.
Unframed notice boards, with their clean edges immediately convey a modern, contemporary feel. It many ways it is similar to the unframed canvass artwork that continues to be popular.
How is a Frameless Felt Notice Board Made?
In many respects a frameless notice board is not much different from a framed one. The core material is still same, which is a wood based medium-high density fibre board. This is the industry standard material for notice boards because of it’s durability, rigidness and good pin retention. Our thinnest boards use an 8mm core, but go up to 10mm. We regard 8mm as the minimum thickness of a pin board, as anything thinner could have problems with warping, and also be an insufficient depth for pins.
Where an unframed board does differ, is that the felt (or other type of fabric) is wrapped around the edge of the board and neatly tucked behind at the back. What many people may not know, is that the fabric is firmly bonded to the board surface and edge. Using an appropriate adhesive, the felt is applied, wrapped around the board and then left in a stable environment to cure for at least 24 hours. This process ensures the fabric becomes a permanent part of the board. This has a number of advantages, not least is the fact that fabric does not move, so will not stretch and become saggy over time. Additionally, it allows you to safely drill through the board surface without the fabric wrapping itself around the drill bit. As a side note, we would still recommend that a slow drill speed is used.
These days fabric colour choices have expanded dramatically. With a choice over 200 colours and a range fabric textures that include felt, modern hessian, corded and Nyloop. Felt remains a popular choice, the basic colours of red, green, blue & grey remain popular because of their low price point. They are the standard choice when it comes to most budget and economy based boards. However the popularity of additional felt colours has been hugely welcomed by buyers. Regardless of whether the buyer requires them for an office, a school or even home use.
Schools especially have warmed to the fact that they can purchase unframed notice boards in a colour that more closely matches their school colours. Businesses also benefit from the extensive colour choice as they are able to better match their corporate colour. Customer reception areas can then have a pin board that blends in with that corporate image and creates a more professional appearance. If those companies want to enhance their modern approach, then the combination of the unframed notice board design plus the greater choice of colours makes an ideal solution.
It may be worth noting, that even without the need to try and replicate existing colours, the choice can be still important. The fabric colour can be selected to not only blend in but contrast other surrounding colours and décor. So, with the amazing choice on offer, you can decide if you want your notice board to match, contrast, shout or be neutral. For more about colour felts & fabrics read our article A Splash of colour!
Unframed, Uncovered & Recycled Notice Boards
Felt or indeed any of the other fabrics mentioned above, are not vital components of unframed notice boards. Indeed, there are many applications where the absence of a fabric can be highly useful. One such example is in the use of a Sundeala pin board. Sundeala is a recycled product, made from waste newsprint such as newspapers and magazines. These waste products are pressed into 9mm thick sheets and make great pin boards. So why choose them? Well apart from the obvious recycled aspect, the lack of a fabric means you are pinning directly into the core of the product. The surface of which can restored to a nearly new condition by a light buffing with sandpaper. Another benefit is because there is no fabric on the edge, the boards can be butt mounted close together to fill entire walls.
In recent years, additional unframed notice board products have emerged that are also recycled such as PolyColour and Eco-colour. This is good news, giving the buyer ever more choice of products to suit their application.
Cut to Size
Sometimes the standard sizes just don’t fill the wall space in the way you want. That’s why we give you the option of buying most types of Unframed notice board in made to measure sizes. They are manufactured in the same way as standard sizes and to the same quality. The pin board is cut from the nearest standard that we cut your custom size from. We then cover and glue the fabric of your choice on the board surface, wrapping it around all for edges and then neatly tucking it around the back of the board.
We are limited to a maximum, single piece size of 2400mm x 1200mm. But can cut any smaller size than this. For larger, wall filling sizes, we supply your custom size in two or more pieces equal sections. Each of these sections is an unframed notice board in it’s own right, that’s to say each piece is individually wrapped with fabric. These sections can then be closely mounted side-by-side to achieve your larger board.
A new unframed notice board material has recently been added to our range called PolyColour. Unusually for a pin board core, this is a plastic based material. The material is produced in such a way that it appears to have a fibrous felt like look. This production technique has a positive effect of making the board very light in weight. Thickness for thickness, this material is lighter than standard pin board cores and lighter than Sundeala. However, like Sundeala this product is made from waste plastics and is therefore classed as an eco-friendly material. PolyColour comes in a range of colours which means that it does not require any felt covering. We can supply PolyColour in standard & made-to-measure sizes.
